PHOTO GUIDELINES FOR PORTRAITS
Choose a photo which shows the head and neck area clearly. If your portrait is to include the entire horse's body, try to choose one which shows all areas clearly. Choose a photo which is in focus and shows detail clearly. If your favorite shot is less than ideal, see if you have some other photos which may be approximately the same angle but which are in focus. This will help me fill in missing detail without as much guesswork. Choose a photo which is well-lit with both light and shadow areas. Photos taken outdoors in bright light but not direct sunlight usually work best. To avoid the "large nose in your face" effect, step back a few feet from your horse and then zoom in to the face. Keep these points in mind if you are taking new photos to be used in your portrait. I can usually remove things like tack and riders in a portrait, so if you want only the horse's portrait don't worry about extra objects in your photo. I can always change backgrounds to accentuate the horse, so don't worry about your background being suitable.
You can email your photos, preferably in higher resolution, such as 300 dpi at an image size of at least 5" wide. Email to firstname.lastname@example.org.You can snail mail your photos if necessary to Alli Farkas, P.O. Box 606, Dowagiac, MI 49047-0606. If you mail the physical photos to me, I will scan them into my computer and immediately mail them back to you. I never use your original photos while creating a painting, so you can rest assured that they will be returned to you in the same condition as received. Please note that because of copyright issues I cannot use a professional photograph as source material unless you obtain written permission from the photographer.
